About the new cancer and wellbeing centre

The North Devon Cancer and Wellbeing Centre is based at North Devon’s district hospital in Barnstaple. The centre will support patients with cancer and other illnesses, as well as their loved ones by providing a dedicated space for treatment, care and advice in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Work began on building the centre in April 2019, with a scheduled completion date of December 2019.

The centre includes an open-plan lounge/diner, a clinic and complementary therapy room, private counselling rooms and a meeting/activity room. It will also provide accommodation for relatives and carers of patients staying in hospital overnight.

Services provided will include a drop-in facility, information on cancer and chronic illnesses, financial and benefits advice, hair loss support, bra fittings, nutritional advice and support to relatives and carers.
In 2018, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) received around 9,000 referrals for cancer and almost 2,000 people were diagnosed with cancer. It is estimated that approximately 6,000 people are currently living with cancer in North Devon so it’s a fantastic development for the area.

Funding for development of the centre has been through charitable contributions raised by NDHTs charitable trust Over and Above. The ongoing running costs will also be covered by fundraising including from a new Over and Above charity shop in Barnstaple.

The Cancer and Wellbeing Centre will be staffed primarily by volunteers, coordinated by a centre manager employed by NDHT.

Handover of the new building is scheduled for Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 with an expectation that it will be fully operational with trained volunteer staff in place by Feb/ Mar 2020.

We are currently recruiting for a number of volunteers to help to support this wonderful new service.
